Recreational Therapies

The Adventure Based Counseling program at Hill Crest utilized an experiential learning model to help patients strengthen in areas such as: communication, decision-making, trust, empathy, cooperation, giving/receiving feedback, and personal and social responsibilities. Through games, activities, initiatives and low- and high-challenge courses, Hill Crest patients can experience and achieve success, which leads to greater self confidence and improved self esteem.

Adventure Based Counseling (ABC)

The ABC Program is an innovative and highly structured counseling model that provides a challenging and supportive atmosphere to the many therapeutic modalities at Hill Crest: Child Acute, Adolescent Acute, Adult Acute, PICU, Adolescent Residential, Group Homes, and Outpatient Services. Outside groups in leadership development and discovering real group empowerment are offered to contracted corporate entities and school based programs.

Credentials: The ABC staff are highly trained and are members of the Association of Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) and focus on both the physical and emotional safety of the participant. The staff facilitate on a Challenge Ropes Course that meets or exceeds all licensing requirements set forth by the ACCT and State of Alabama Department of Youth Services for Outdoor Adventure Programs. The ABC staff members are Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRS) and are members of the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC).
